Funeral? Cremation? Your Options After a death, most people seek the services of a funeral home or mortuary. Funeral homes and mortuaries provide services including embalming, restoration of the body, viewings, memorial and funeral services, cremation, and burials. It is not, however, necessary to use a funeral home, and you need not use all of the services provided by funeral homes. For example, while embalming and, if there is to be a viewing, restoration followed by burial, is the most common way to disposition the body, other options are available. You may choose not to embalm the body. Some people object to embalming on religious, cultural, or environmental grounds. Utah law does, however, require that if a body is not buried or cremated within 24 hours of death, it must be refrigerated or embalmed. Funeral homes may make refrigeration available on request. You may also choose to either bury or cremate the body. Cremation is usually less costly than burial. Funeral services (a service with the body present) or memorial services (a service held without the body or following cremation) may be held at a funeral home, at the home of the deceased person, in a church, or at other locations. The following pages and links provide information that may help you in your decisions concerning the disposition of a body after death.
